Do you need an FBI background check for Mexican residency?

Last reviewed: 2026-11-07

Many Americans moving to Mexico never need an FBI background check. Some do: it depends on the type of residency, the consulate and the step you are at. Here is how to know, and what to do if you are asked for one.

When it is and is not asked for

Requirements vary by consulate and change without notice, so check the current list of the office handling your case before ordering a check.

  • Temporary resident visa at a Mexican consulate in the US: the published checklists of most consulates do not include an FBI check, especially for applications based on income or savings.
  • Some consulates outside the US, and some types of residency, do ask for it, for example certain permanent residency applications.
  • The immigration office (INM) in Mexico, an employer, a school or a licensing body may ask for one for its own process, for example for work with children.

If you are asked for one

  1. Fingerprints: one of our technicians in Mexico takes your fingerprints to the FBI standard, by appointment only. Book online and we confirm the place and time with you.
  2. FBI result: your fingerprints are sent electronically and the result usually arrives within 24–48 hours.
  3. Apostille: Mexico is part of the Hague Convention, so the FBI result needs an apostille from the US Department of State (not from a US state).
  4. Spanish translation: Mexican authorities usually ask for a translation by a certified translator (perito traductor). Ask the office receiving it which translators it accepts.

Timing

Offices that ask for an FBI check usually want a recent one, often issued in the last 3 to 6 months. Request it close to the date you will submit it.

Questions

Can I get FBI fingerprints in Mexico?

Yes. Our technicians in Mexico take FBI-standard fingerprints by appointment only, and send them to the FBI electronically. You do not need to travel to the US.

Is a Mexican "carta de no antecedentes penales" the same thing?

No. That certificate covers Mexico only. If you are asked for your record from the US, you need the FBI background check.

How long does the apostille take?

The US Department of State sets the pace. We tell you the current turnaround when you book and keep you updated on your order page.
