Where to get FBI fingerprints in Spain
Last reviewed: 2026-11-07
To get an FBI background check you need a set of fingerprints taken to the FBI standard. In Spain that is less obvious than it sounds. Here are your options and what to expect from each.
Your options
- The US embassy or consulates: they generally do not take fingerprints for FBI background checks for private purposes.
- A Policía Nacional station: some will roll your fingerprints in ink on an FD-258 card, but it depends entirely on the station and the officer on duty, and some ask for a letter first. You then post the card to the US yourself, which adds weeks.
- A trip to the US: possible, but rarely practical just for fingerprints.
- Our offices: a trained technician takes your fingerprints to the FBI standard and sends them electronically. The result usually arrives within 24–48 hours, with no paper card to post.
Why ink cards get rejected
Smudged or faint ink prints are the most common reason the FBI rejects a submission, and each rejection means starting again and losing weeks. Electronic capture is checked for quality on the spot. If the FBI still rejects your fingerprints, we take them again for free.
After the fingerprints
For use in Spain, the FBI result then needs a Hague apostille from the US Department of State and a sworn translation into Spanish. We arrange both if you need them.
Questions
Does the FBI accept fingerprints taken in Spain?
Yes. What matters is that they are taken to the FBI standard, not where. Our electronic submissions are accepted like those taken in the US.
Can I take my own fingerprints on an FD-258 card?
The card has to be completed by someone taking your fingerprints, not by you, and self-taken prints are very likely to be rejected.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes. Book online and choose the office and time that suit you; you will see the next free appointment straight away.
